Blown Flathead Photos

The Motorhead Mart Special

This 2540 lb. street/strip car has turned the quarter mile in 12.41 seconds at over 107.6 mph. See “What’s New” section. The current engine, nicknamed “Killer”, is shown below during dyno testing. The previous engine made over 300 drag strip passes and accumulated 1900 street miles in the Motorhead Mart Special. That engine has racked up another 2500 street miles in Joe Abbin’s 1950 Mercury, all with only routine tune-ups and oil changes. That’s durability!

Killer Flathead

On the dyno, this engine demonstrated 335 hp. at 5100 rpm and 365 ft-lbs at 4300 rpm with 8 psi boost and 110 octane race gas. All power readings corrected to 60F and 29.92 inHg

Andreen/Hendershot

A competition-altered powered by a 276 cu.in. engine with a Roadrunner kit fielded by the team of Jeff Andreen and Kent Hendershot of Denver, CO has produced a best ET of 9.58 seconds at 140 mph in the quarter mile with 11 psi of boost on straight alcohol. Estimated hp is over 450 at 6000 rpm. The car routinely turns in the nines at Denver and Albuquerque with over mile high altitudes!

Livingston

How well do they work? A typical 276 cu.in. blown flathead for the street such as the one built by Jerry Livingston at United Engine Service in Wichita, KS produced an uncorrected 250 hp at 5200 rpm and 280 ft-lbs of torque at 3500 rpm on their dyno. Boost was 6 psi maximum and the engine runs on premium pump gas. There are over 100 customers in many states who have achieved similar results.

Red Matthei

The 1940 Ford coupe of Red Matthei from Cleveland, Ohio has reset the record books multiple times at Bonneville and Maxon in the XF/BVGC class for the last two years. Top speed in 2004 was 140+ mph. This was achieved with a 302 cu.in. blown and intercooled flathead on gas with a Roadrunner competition kit. The engine produces approximately 340 hp at 5500 rpm with 11 psi boost on 110 octane race gas. Although Red's stock bodied' 40 is not street driven it certainly could be per the rules of his class.
